Beef producers have a chance to examine beef business profit drivers for today and the future during a phone seminar on Wednesday, May 9.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) BetterBeef Profitable Beef Systems will consider current influences and look ahead to the impacts of possible climate scenarios on beef production in 2030.

Speakers include DPI's Jane Court and Ruth Corrigan and John Webb-Ware from the Mackinnon Project.

Organiser Ruth Corrigan said with the seminar held over the phone, producers could hear the latest industry information in the comfort of their own home or office without travelling long and costly distances.

Topics will include:

  • Drivers of profit for beef breeding enterprises, presented by industry expert John Webb-Ware;
  • Future pasture growth and growing season trends for South West and North East Victoria;
  • Impact of future climate on beef breeding enterprises and adaptations to 2030 climate including: Soil fertility and stocking rate, time of calving and steer turn-off dates, and the role of lucerne on the farm.

Ms Corrigan said climate models were being used to investigate possible trends of the future that could impact upon farm businesses.

"While we can't predict exactly what 2030 will look like there are some useful tools such as modeling that can be used," she said.

The phone seminar will be held in collaboration with Adaptation to Climate Change in Southern Livestock Industries, a research and extension program funded by Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry and Meat and Livestock Australia's More Beef from Pastures program.
