Recently he bought nearly 10,000 megs of water for $10m in the new irrigation schemes being constructed in Tasmania.
He lives in Melbourne but is considered one of Tasmania's favourite sons after he bought Tassal out of Receivership for $42m and saved 700 jobs. Five years on, Tassal is listed on the Stock Exchange with a value of $300m.
Recently he bought nearly 10,000 megs of water for $10m in the new irrigation schemes being constructed in Tasmania by the State and Federal governments. The water had first been offered to local farmers and Williams bought all that was left. Local farmers love him because the Schemes will now go ahead, ane if the water had not been sold the Schemes would have foundered.
Williams reasons that the water will significantly alter land use in Tasmania's Midlands where land is cheap and turn much of it to high intensity horticulture, dairy and cropping.
