Farmers at the NSW Farmers' Association 2010 Annual Conference: Value of Agriculture have voted to lobby for the establishment of a group to promote Australian grain to export markets.
NSW Farmers' Association Grains Committee Chair Mark Hoskinson says the grain growing Members of the Association and Australia are currently being denied the access to promotion and advocacy of their high quality product in the competitive international market.
"Our international competitors are filling this void and eroding the competitive advantage of Australian grains in this market segment, through improvements in grain quality parameters and cost of execution in trades," Mr Hoskinson said.
"Since the deregulation of the Australian Bulk Wheat exports a void has become apparent to the industry of generic promotion of all Australian grains.
Australian grain growers need and deserve an authority to be set up by the Federal Government to promote and brand Australian grains in a synchronised and coordinated fashion,"" he said.
"There is an array of exporting companies who market Australian grains internationally, however there is no overarching body responsible for market development, trade advocacy, branding and promoting Australian grains.
"There is no single body educating millers, bakers, maltsters, industrial users and feed grains users and liaising with international Governments and buyers on residue issues.
"As a result, the reputations of Australian grains are suffering. It is time for action," Mr Hoskinson concluded.
